So yesterday I started running. Well...mostly walking with a little bit of running. I heard of this program a few months ago called Couch-to-5k - basically a program that gets people who have never run in their lives (me!) off their butts and able to run a 5k in 9-15 weeks, depending on how fast you can move through the levels.
Here's the thing - I do exercise videos at home. I lift weights (really fucking light ones, because I have no upper-body strength), do sit-ups and push-ups, play on our Wii Fit, and occasionally use our elliptical trainer. But all of these activities are done in the house and I.am.so.fucking.bored. My sister found this great place near our houses that offers really awesome classes for really cheap - I especially loved the TurboKick class. I was able to go for a few months last year when I was new to my job and actually could leave by 5:00 every day. Now that I've been here for a while I have WAY more on my plate and I never get home at a time that allows me to get to these classes. Boo.
IB and I tossed around the idea of doing this Couch-to-5k program when I found it a few months ago, but at that point we a) thought me might be moving soon and b) hoped I would be pregnant soon. We just couldn't justify the cost of buying good running shoes and all that at the time. Now that we know I won't be pregnant again at least for 2-3 months (fuck), we decided now was as good a time as any. Especially since we lost the baby, the appeal of being out in the fresh air and just running (walking) to clear my mind is incredibly appealing. Many of my friends and family are going to be surprised that I want to run. I've never really run more than bases while paying softball, and the last 2 times I've tried to run I've cracked my head open leaving a beautiful scar above my left eye, and twisted my ankle and scraped my leg up. I'm a dumbass.
Anywho, IB and I went out on Sunday and bought running shoes and some running shorts - I had to buy some tight shorts to go under my running shorts too because apparently women are supposed to run in shorts that look more like underwear than anything else. Fucking typical, right? But yesterday, we went out for our first run. These are timed intervals that we follow - they're not distance-based until near the end. But in 25 minutes yesterday we went about 2.5 miles. Not great I know, but not as bad as we thought either. And I actually kind of enjoyed it. Shocker.
The worst part? Having to walk back up our goddamn hill afterwards. Seriously...fuck that hill.
